Heat Resistant Cables and Wires for Extreme Operating Conditions
Heat-resistant cables and temperature-resistant wires are used wherever conventional cables quickly reach their limits due to thermal stress. Typical applications include the steel industry, plastics processing, furnace and plant engineering, refrigeration, heating and air conditioning technology, as well as lighting and sauna applications.
SAB develops and manufactures high-temperature cables for continuous operating temperatures of up to +400°C. In addition to temperature resistance, factors such as mechanical stress, chemical resistance, flexibility and service life play a crucial role.
Overview of Temperature Ranges and Materials
Selecting the right temperature-resistant cable largely depends on the specific application. Different insulation and sheath materials offer distinct advantages in terms of temperature resistance, flexibility and resistance to environmental influences:
Silicone cables (Besilen®): highly flexible, suitable for dynamic applications up to approx. +180°C
FEP and ETFE cables: excellent chemical resistance, ideal for sensor and data transmission applications
PFA cables: high thermal and chemical resistance for demanding environments up to approx. +250°C
Fiberglass and special cables: designed for extreme operating conditions up to +400°C
In practice, cable selection is often initially based on the required temperature range and then further refined according to material properties.
Selecting Heat-Resistant Cables by Temperature Range
The suitable cable type for a given temperature range can be quickly determined based on the maximum operating temperature:
- up to 150°C: FEP and ETFE cables
- up to 180°C: silicone cables for flexible applications
- up to 250°C: PFA cables for chemically demanding environments
- up to 400°C: special cables with fiberglass insulation
In addition, halogen-free materials such as SABIX® are used to meet increased safety and fire protection requirements.

Depending on the application, SAB offers temperature-resistant cables for both fixed installation and highly flexible, dynamic applications. Especially in dynamic environments such as drag chains or automated production systems, not only temperature resistance but also bending cycles and mechanical durability are critical factors.
Typical application areas include:
- Steel and metallurgical industry
- Plastics and rubber processing
- Mechanical and plant engineering
- Sensor and measurement technology
- Energy and HVAC technology
- Shipbuilding, railway and transportation technology
Solutions are also available for specialized applications such as high-temperature data, bus and Ethernet cables.
Customized High-Temperature Cable Solutions
In addition to a comprehensive standard portfolio, SAB places strong emphasis on the development of customized cable solutions. Each year, numerous tailor-made designs are realized, precisely adapted to the specific requirements of the application.
Key design parameters include:
- specific temperature ranges and thermal cycles
- mechanical stress and minimum bending radii
- chemical and environmental influences
- electrical requirements and applicable standards
This ensures temperature-resistant cables that not only withstand thermal stress but also deliver long-term reliability. In the following overview, you will find a selection of high-temperature cables that have already been developed and manufactured for our customers.
