What are the key parameters that need to be considered when choosing a suitable cable?

Selection guide for dynamic and drag chain cables

Choosing the right drag chain cable is critical for reliable and durable power and data transmission in dynamic applications. The selection chart provides a structured overview of the key criteria to consider when making a selection.

Areas of application
For which area of application is the cable used? The selection guide shows which cables are suitable for different applications, e.g:

  • Robot applications (e.g. torsion-capable cables)
  • Drag chain lengths with short or long travel distances
  • Data or control cables, depending on the required signal transmission

Electrical properties
When selecting a suitable cable, important electrical parameters such as rated voltage, test voltage and peak operating voltage must also be taken into account. Is a special voltage range approved for UL/cUL required?

Mechanical and environmental resistance
For a long service life under harsh conditions, other factors must be taken into account, such as

  • Bending radius (particularly small bending radii for tight installation)
  • Temperature resistance (from -50 °C to +200 °C)
  • Ozone and UV resistance (for use in harsh environments)
  • Resistance to oil, chemicals and salt water

Dynamic load and speed
The selection table compares the expected service life of the different cable types, taking into account common parameters used in practice, such as:

  • Acceleration (from 5 m/s² to over 40 m/s²),
  • Travel speed (from 1 m/s to over 10 m/s)
  • Chain length (from 5 m to over 25 m)

Special properties and standards
Depending on the application, special features such as low capacitance, low-temperature flexibility, halogen-free or special fire protection standards are relevant. Is shielding of the cable or a twisted pair design required for interference-free data transmission? Does the cable require UL/cUL approval or must additional standards be fulfilled?

Overview and product link with further technical data
The cables listed in the PDF overview compare all the important parameters for the specific selection of a suitable cable and thus enable a quick selection of the appropriate cable. All cables are linked directly to the corresponding product pages, where the technical data and specific properties of the individual cables are described in detail.
